EEE Virus Detected in Multiple Counties
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus, a rare but serious viral disease, has been detected in several counties in the Hudson Valley region of New York.
The virus, which is primarily spread by mosquitoes, has a high mortality rate of approximately 30% in humans.
Four US Towns Implement Voluntary Lockdown
In response to the outbreak, four towns in the Hudson Valley have implemented voluntary lockdowns, urging residents to stay indoors as much as possible, particularly during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
Symptoms of EEE Virus
- Sudden onset of fever
- Headache
- Chills
Preventing EEE Virus Infection
There is no specific vaccine for EEE virus, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of infection:
- Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus
- Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors
- Avoid outdoor activities during dusk and dawn
- Remove standing water from around your property to reduce mosquito breeding grounds
If you experience any symptoms of EEE virus, seek medical attention immediately.
