Kentucky Derby Contender Mugatu Works Out at Churchill Downs

Kentucky Derby contender Mugatu worked out at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on Monday, in preparation for the Preakness Stakes.

The work was the first for Mugatu since finishing third in the Derby on May 6. The colt was ridden by Mike Smith and worked five furlongs in 1:00.20.

"He worked really well," trainer Bob Baffert said. "He's coming back from the Derby and he's doing well."

The Preakness Stakes is the second leg of the Triple Crown and will be run on Saturday, May 18th, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. The race is 1 3/16 miles and is open to 3-year-old Thoroughbreds.

Bob Baffert's National Treasure won the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Pimlico Race Course. The colt was ridden by John Velazquez and won by 1 1/2 lengths.

The Preakness Stakes was the second leg of the Triple Crown and National Treasure's victory gives Baffert his eighth Preakness win. The colt is now the favorite to win the Belmont Stakes and become the 14th horse to win the Triple Crown.

74 Degrees but a 40% Chance of Showers

The weather forecast for the Preakness Stakes is calling for a high of 74 degrees and a 40% chance of showers.

If it rains, the track will be wet and the horses will have to adjust their running styles. However, the rain is not expected to be heavy and the track should be in good condition.
